Marriott International making big gains in corporate responsibility
Marriott International has released its 2015 Sustainability Report and is making gains across all sectors of the corporate responsibility agenda, including in its community and diversity programmes.
Highlights of the report include:
Marriott has 140 LEED Registered and LEED Certified properties and earned over 1600 TripAdvisor GreenLeader badges.
Their energy intensity is down 9.4% against a 2007 baseline, with greenhouse gas emissions down 10% and they’ve exceeded their 20% water reduction goal with intensity down 22.9%.
The company banned shark fin across all their restaurants worldwide.
They are part of ITP’s Hotel Water Measurement Initiative Working Group.
In October Marriott International, Inc. celebrates more than 25 years of its global diversity and inclusion programme, alongside the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) and National Disability Employment Awareness Month in the U.S.
The company’s report details its diversity and inclusion commitments as well as its achievements and initiatives supporting the environment, local communities and youth employment.
Diversity and inclusion highlights include:
- Marriott has achieved a 300% increase in women’s representation in top leadership positions.
- Across the company, nine women lead divisions worth more than $100 million in revenue.
- Women comprise over 30% of the company’s board of directors’ positions.
- The company is on track to reach a goal of 1,000 minority- and women-owned hotels by 2020, with 699 properties currently qualifying.
- The company continues to increase purchases with diverse suppliers for a total of more than $4.5 billion spent since 2003 and a goal of $568 million for 2015.
As well as working with and supporting the Youth Career Initiative, Marriott supports a non-profit partner - the Marriott Foundation for People with Disabilities. Celebrating its 25th year, the Foundation’s Bridges from School to Work programme was designed by Marriott’s human resources associates and experts in the field of disabilities to transform the lives of young adults through the power of a job. More than 20,000 youth have benefitted from the programme’s services with more than 80% of participants securing local, competitive jobs in nine U.S. cities. The Foundation is committed to serving 1,500 Bridges young adults annually by 2018; this represents a 50% growth rate in just three years.
The personal stories of those who have benefitted from the programme, such as that of this year’s Annual Youth Achievement Award recipient, Maurice Dupree, inspire investments that make a difference. His story and thousands of others include the common themes of personal growth, potential realized and a path to a brighter future - discovered through hard work, resiliency and perseverance.

The Bridges team amazes me with their ability to work in a customised way to match the skills and potential of young adults with employers who can offer competitive opportunities in banking, retail, entertainment, food service, and hospitality, as well as in the government and non-profit sectors.”
Marriott is a key partner for ITP’s opportunity programme for young people the Youth Career Initiative. YCI works with global hotel partners and NGOs to offer classroom-based and practical learning in a range of departments throughout a hotel, as well as mentoring and life-skills to around 450 students every year.
Additionally the programme, with funding from the US State Department, targets survivors of human trafficking to help give them skills and a more positive future. You can watch a film about that work here.
The company’s sustainability report also reveals the company’s 100% score on the Human Rights Campaign’s 2015 Corporate Equality Index, and they were the first hotel company to join the #YourActionsCount Anti-Trafficking campaign.
Additionally Marriott has donated 160,000 hours by its associates to youth programmes, the Ritz-Carlton brand has developed a skills-based training programme which has worked with 15,000 young people since 2009; Courtyard by Marriott aims to engage with 10,000 students teachers and administrators in the next three years; Marriott’s hotels in Europe want to create 20,000 career opportunities for young people by 2020, and the China Hospitality Education Initiative with Marriott China Hotels will impact over 20,000 students every year within the next five years.
